Pick of the Week:

Struck by Lightning. High school senior Carson Phillips (Chris Colfer, Glee) was destined for bigger things than his close-minded small town could ever offer. He was on a path to greatness, but destiny had a different plan when he was suddenly killed by a bolt of lightning in his school parking lot. Demonstrating that life is what happens while you’re busy planning your future, Carson recounts the last few weeks of his life via witty, insightful flashbacks, including a blackmail scheme targeting the popular kids in school that he concocts with his best friend (Rebel Wilson, Bridesmaids), a home life that includes a mother (Allison Janney, Juno, The West Wing) who s more interested in the bottle than her son s future, and an estranged father (Dermot Mulroney, New Girl, My Best Friend s Wedding) who suddenly appears with a pregnant fiancée (Christina Hendricks, Mad Men).

By Katie O’Shea

Every once in awhile, a film’s elements come together in complete harmony – plot, character, makeup, effects. This summer, that film is Star Trek Into Darkness. While there have been other films I have seen from this summer’s slate of movies that I have immensely enjoyed – including Iron Man 3, and the upcoming Now You See Me - none have reached the heights of Into Darkness. A new bar has been set for this summer, and I have difficulty believing that any other film scheduled between now and August will vault over it. To all involved in the making of this feature, I tip my tiny hat to you. Well done. Continue reading

Gangster Squad. Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and – if he has his way – every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop – except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

Pick of the Week:

Django Unchained. Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Academy Award ®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with a German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christolph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive. Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago. Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz rouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival…

We here at Team Fog Reviews are based in Boston. We live here, work here, and attend the screenings which allow us to write our reviews for you here in this city. Today, the typically joyous occasion of the Boston Marathon was marred by two bomb explosions close to the race’s finish line downtown. While we and our friends are thankfully safe, we know that is not the case for everyone tonight. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this inconceivable attack and with the people who stepped in to respond to this tragedy, whether trained medical professionals, police, firefighters, or fellow spectators and marathoners.

Film Review: The Place Beyond the Pines

By Katie O’Shea

Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines is an ambitious tale that stands well as three separate stories, but has trouble gelling together into the overarching narrative he attempts to create. It explores to varying degrees the effects the actions (or inactions) of two men have on their own futures and that of their families, showing the far reaching effect of their decisions.
